What is Kava?

Kava (piper methysticum) is a shrub in the pepper family. The roots contain kavalactones, which can provide enjoyable effects on our mind and body. This psychoactive plant is grown in tropical islands like Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, and Hawai’i. It has been used for thousands of years for ceremonial, medicinal, and social purposes. Traditionally, the roots are kneaded firmly in a fine mesh fabric in a bowl of water, which strains the indigestible root fibers out. The kavalactones fall into the water, creating a beverage that we call kava!
